It's been cold here for over a week, not getting out of the teens most days. We are in for a warm-up over the weekend, meaning we will lose the little snow we have. Back to drab. I kept myself occupied throughout the day. I set up installation of new wireless internet service. We have had one option since the beginning of internet time, going back to dial-up. Frontier Communications. The devil in corporate form. A new company started laying fiber optic cable a couple of years ago, but left the four houses on my street without. Why? Good question. They just finished adding us in last week.
Frontier had no competition, so they thumbed their greedy noses at those of us stuck with them. Very slow, very unreliable. I can't stream music anymore because the service pops in and out. For this mess they are charging $105 per month. This new provider is only 1G, but for us that is like a sonic boom. It will be installed next Thursday. There will be music in my house once again. For less $$$.
So....on a cold, extremely windy day I spent the rest of my day in the kitchen. I have become a hausfrau, whoda thought? I made a loaf of spelt bread and turkey and dumpling soup. The soup was lunch. I like my dumplings large. That way I can say I just had one. I also prefer them soft. I did a little ironing. Woo-hoo!!
Well, that's it on this sunny, frigid morning. The horses are out, the cats are snoozing and I am on my second cup of coffee. A brilliant start to the day.

You do sound domestic today! Verizon long since finished laying FIOS in this town. Our HOA board refused it when offered and missed the window.
Yay for fast internet! They brought fiber out to us a few years ago, what a difference!
The dumpling looks great~ I need to make some...have to put it on my list!
I'll be sad to see the snow go.
Monopolies almost always take advantage. :(
That was not a smart move on their part. None of the mobile companies offer anything here. We were stuck. I am a domestic goddess!
I like dumplings. I also really like the ease of making them, Far Side!
I don't want the snow to melt, either, Rita. Monopolies rule, it's become common.
You went to spam. I'm looking for reliability, J&B. This sketchy on/off business is not helpful. And they charge alot for very little. Lucky you to have gotten it!
I've just been looking for music too -- mine that used to be on iTunes. Somehow, when I got a new computer last year I seemed to have missed backing up my music. I found two old hard portable hard drives, but it is on neither. That is rather too bad. I was hoping to find some of MY Christmas music. Alas!
BTW, have you ever thought to try Starlink?
Our Internet provider here is crappy precisely because they garner so much of the market. Your soup looks great!
I hope you find your music, AC. I have amazon music. Starlink is satellite and everyone I know who has had satellite internet has not recommended it. I looked it up, $120/mo. I had considered satellite at one time.
It sounds like you have a similar situation as ours, e. From 2000 till now it's been terrible with no choice.
Our local phone company installed fiber optic in 2016 I think. They provide great service and we've obviously been spoiled by it. $90 per month and we are very very rural. Like dead end road with only 2 houses on the road rural.
Ummm, I said rural too many times! We get music and great streaming.
π
We are about 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, Val! These companies have acted like we are in Siberia. I'm hoping this works. I just saw that AT&T wireless is now available, so if this doesn't work I have another option. But you are very very rural. π
My daughter and son-in-law have installed Starlink up on our land. Yes, it's expensive but it works well in areas without many people using it. We had HughesNet but it was too slow for her to have Zoom meetings when she was staying up there. So it depends on where you are. That lunch looks great!
We have Spectrum for our land line, cable and internet. So far so good. Our weather has been very similar to yours. Should be 50 in a couple of days, but this afternoon we had whiteouts. I must say, it makes cooking a cozy thing to do. Your food photos are killing me!
It never got up to 30 today.
Wow, $100 a month for the internet? That's pretty extortionate. We pay £48 ($61) a month.
I suppose it does depend on where you are. It's good it works out for her. Soup is a winter lunch staple around here!
It's still cold but tomorrow is a high of 46! What the.......There is no snow forecast. We haven't had a landline for about a dozen years and we don't have cable. I can stream through Roku but I rarely use it. It does make cooking and baking cozy. Since the beginning of social media I have been regaling the internet with food photos!
Indeed it is, nick. The new service is $62/month. Hopefully better service.
I would imagine Utah can get pretty cold, Dora.
I've been seeing ads for Google Fiber but it's not in my area. Has anyone tried that out? Internet can be a pain, I couldn't get anyone to come out to my new place for over a week. It was miserable. Hang in there, you'll have tunes in your home soon!
We love our fiber optic. It is 100000 percent faster. And cheaper. When I have a house full of grandkids, everyone can use a device with no slow downs.
We still have Spectrum (today ) for our tv. Since Mr Merry has to watch local news and weather at 5am and the smaller cities around us are not set up to stream. Today we can't get it to work. Cable guy just here. The 55" tv we bought last Christmas can't pick up the wacky new crap that Spectrum has on their boxes. I am not in a good mood. Am I buying a tv once a year when Spectrum updates? grrrrr - meanwhile last year's tv can stream any other service I want (like British mysteries and Tubi reruns and PBS). grrrrr Always something.
We have Starlink (Thank you Elon Musk for that) it is so simple no cables and when the power is down it is on because it is satellite service. The $120 a month is well worth it for us as we also have home business's, and it also runs out TV network.
You have reason to be in a bad mood, Miss Merry. We had to have satellite because there is no cable laid when I paid for "cable" tv. When Roku came on the market I bought one and have used digital antennas for local channels. Even with all the tree around us the antennas work well. Maybe something to consider?
Marlane, we had satellite tv for a few years. It's great you found something that works so well for you. You can't beat that!
Thanks. I've missed the music.
So, that's what a Spelt looks like? *Bwahahaha, I never knew and thought it was a Fish first time I heard the Word, LOL* Yay on getting a new Provider, I remember when our Coz used to Cost Eight Bucks, now, well, yeah... an obscene amount even with a bundle coz they provide Cable/Landline Phone and Internet Service for us. I feel like a Housefrau too lately and have been making Homemade Chili, at ridiculous Hours and the Kids wonder why it smells like something great Cooking at like Four in the Morning... Crockpot of coarse. *Winks* No Snow really yet, is that unusual for your area?
Ooops I meant to type Cox Cable...
They are called smelt, but this is funny! I hope you are feeling better. It seems you may be if you are cooking, Dawn.
