The Beginning

The start of The Vegetable Garden. This is the result of a Sunday of turf digging. A little more to go for turf removal and then I'll haul more manure over and till it in.

Planting is just around the corner.

Yeah! Looking forward to seeing your progress on your garden. It is just the right size!

How is Bounce doing?

Bounce has lost more hair. I haven't had the heart to update his blog, but I will do that in the next few days.

It's very windy today, so it's been a challenge to work in the gardens, but I got a bunch of bulbs planted and some more transplants done. A little late to thin day lily and Iris, but they are so thick that they aren't blooming anyway.

It was a good thing it took so long to remove the turf, I had much grander plans for size!

I'm a woos so I haven't been checking on Bounce. Oh, poor baby.

Another reason to be grateful for where I live I see. I don't have to dig up grass before I plant.

Don't you have grass?

send me manure please. LOL, no don't. I hope you let that manure age before you spread it on the garden. It will burn the plants if it is too fresh. It is usually best to compost it first.

You don't want a nice big box of manure? I'd have it sealed in a plastic bag so no one would know!

No problem on the composting thing. Manure gets stock piled and then spread twice a year. I always have a manure mountain here. More info than anyone wanted. : )

Isn't it exciting? You are about a week (or two) ahead of me with your planting season. I can't safely plant anything until after Memorial Day (I live in the valley). I did get the potatoes in a couple of weeks ago though...and the rhubarb is transplanted.
Did you figure out what you are planting, vegetable-wise?

As bad as our weather is, living in the lower third of the state does help!

I am planting shallots, onions and two varieties of garlic. Three lettuce, two types of carrots, leeks, tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet). I need to see if I will have room for vining plants. I would like zucchini and eggplant. I will also plant a variety of herbs, which I have always done. I'm doing companion gardening, so I have it plotted out as to what goes best with what. I have to see how my space works out for anything thing else.

Your garden looks like the perfect size. I can't imagine trying to keep the weeds out of a garden bigger than what you have!! You'll have to keep pictures posted.

lol. No, no grass here, but I'm peculiar that way. I don't like grass. Besides my veggie garden grows all year round so I rotate crops.

Wonderful start! It is a nasty job removing turf. There is another way for any future projects you might have. Check out my garden site. it tell you how to "smother grass" and plant right over it. Thanks for following my cottage life sight!

I did read your smothering technique, but it is too late in the season to use it. But I will refer to it in the future. It is a great idea.

Alicia, I hope it is the perfect size, I tend to over do.

No grass, that is something I can't imagine. You must post a photo on your blog so I can see it.
