Took a Tumble

Last evening. A hard one. Ever since the brain injury I have had poor balance. I stopped riding because it felt unsafe. I'm now older and I have been inactive for three years, making my already poor balance worse. I wear sliders, comfortable, thick soled footwear which is proving unsafe for me. The sole is about two inches thick, so I need to pick my feet up higher than is my normal, which I don't always do. I have a step-up from the living room to the kitchen, this time I didn't pick my foot up high enough and snagged the sole on the step, sending me backward in a clumsy fall. The worst part was Mark. He was a hot mess, hovering and sure I was taking my last breath.  Long story short, nothing was injured, I was quite sore, but all parts worked. This morning I was fine, my back hurt just a bit more, but that was it. Lesson learned, no more sliders.

I have plantar fasciitis to I wear something like that around the house. Mine are too big. I should really get a pair that fit. Sorry about your fall and general reduction of your activities. Yes, I understand that too.

I recommend Birkenstock "Birkies" as they fit well and are very comfortable, even for all day, despite the fact they're rubber (or something similar). I usually also wear Birkenstock "Arizona" sandals as they are such good support and never trip me up.

We live in Virginia, so our weather is milder than yours.

Wishing you well.

Wow! So glad you did not break anything! I have worn crocs for decades....you can put straps over your heels if you need them....so far, so good. Funny, we have a 3 or 4 inch step down from our dining room into the living room. I always have to give people a heads up.

It was 70 degrees here today and should be in the high 60s tomorrow. Did it cool down out there?
Be careful!!!!

Sorry about the fall. It's always a puzzle, which shoes are comfortable and trip proof! I'm glad you're okay considering.

I second the Birkenstock suggestion, the Arizona and other slider styles. Glad you're okay.

I'm so sorry you fell. I made the change to sturdy shoes. You might have to try a few styles until you get the right one. I actually have a pair of tennis shoes I got at Aldi that make me feel stable. Unfortunately they are 1. ugly 2. wearing out. I get some funny looks when I wear them in public. And Aldi has never had them again. I keep looking for something similar. Good luck!

Oh shit. I am so sorry. I live in fear of falling, since the surgeries and non-recovery, my balance and ability to recover my balance... well, not so great.

Please rest and heal.

Oh No! Falling is no good.

Hopefully you can find some decent and comfortable footwear that you can get along with.

Glad you are okay, although a bit sore.

AC, aging is a process I haven't quite figured out, especially since it happened to me so fast. Get inside footwear that fits!

Barbara Anne, thank you for your comment, I will look into Birkies today. Yes, you have a milder climate, except for maybe this year. It's been warm and strange.

Lori, I've never noticed the step down to your living room in your photos. I'm going to pay closer attention. I'm more sore today than yesterday, which makes sense. Hobbling around.

Boud, I knew I needed to be careful with these and mostly was. Except this time, and that's the time that mattered!

Thanks B&B. I'm going to look at them today.

Miss Merry, I find tennis shoes ugly, too. I bought a pink pair a couple of years ago, figuring if I was going to wear them, I make a statement. I am not comfortable with them on in the house. A lifetime of not wearing shoes in the house affects me.

Ami, I second that emotion! I have become aware of of falling potential, too. A crummy way to go through life, eh?

Sandra said...

Val, it sure isn't! I'm going to look into the Birkenstocks. I'm pretty sore today.

My husband has some balance issues.

Dora, sorry to know that. It is tricky sometimes.

Oh no! Hope you are just sore...falls are scary:(

Far Side, it's really scary. I didn't break anything but I am sore. I need to be more aware.
