I was scrolling through photos and came upon a couple I must have scanned at some time. This is 1990 or '91. Chloe, on the right, was a Dalmation/Lab cross and Jessie, on the left, was a retired racing Greyhound. Chloe was a ball of fire!
Nellie, also a racer, wrestling with Chloe while Jessie leaves the scene. I've had three greyhounds. The third was a puppy. I don't know her story, only that she wasn't from a racetrack breeder. Probably a show breeder who didn't think she was show quality. I got her from someone who couldn't handle the energy of a Greyhound puppy. I got Chloe the same way, our neighbor had her and she was too much for them. She was a lot of doggo.
It is strange to be without dogs. Since I was born they have been a part of my life, until July of 2023, when Keetah had a heart attack. Mark really misses them but I just don't have it in me to train a dog to living here. It was easier when I had a pack because the other dogs helped me with the newcomer. At one time I had seven large dogs. I didn't limit my overdoing to horses and cats. Really, I just gave the unwanted a home. Like the cats. So, cats have to fill the hole.
It has been miserably hot and humid. Minnesota has turned into the tropics. I had to turn on the ancient AC unit and once again it didn't let me down. Cooler, but still hot and very humid today. I'll take winter any day over this.

Hi Sandra, I am with you on taking winter over this heat. Lovely post, the dogs 🐕 are beautiful. Animals are wonderful company ❤️ and great therapy as well. Thank you so much for sharing your memories.
I'm for winter too! Although I;m guessing our summers don't get as hot as yours do. I have indoor projects and turn the air conditioner on.
I had forgotten but you have reminded me that our daughter minded a Whippet for a few weeks. It was perhaps the most placid dog ever.
Beautiful dogs. Thanks for sharing them here and yes, the heat is oppressive, and the rain does not seem to help.
Dogs wrestling is the best. They are so playful. Who needs tv when you have dogs?
So hot!!! I grew up with dogs but my husband and I have never had one. We have a tiny house and I told my husband dogs or kids. He picked kids. We both worked full time and it would have been too much. We were always taking care of my parents dogs when they traveled and now my kids are grown with dogs so we still have them in our lives. Just not in my house.
I love watching dogs playfighting. One of my favorite things, actually.
It's amazing how they get into our hearts, isn't it? It's been a really long time since we had to have our Maggie put down, and neither one of us thinks we can handle having to deal with that again. In addition, we're realistically at an age where the dog might outlive both of us. That's a cruel thing to do to a dog.
We are dog people also, it is hard not having our own dog. The most we ever had at once was eight that counts a litter of four puppies, that found good homes!
I have always had so many critters. But living in apartments I chose cats vs dogs. Didn't want to get dressed to walk a dog in the freezing cold. Even if I also prefer the cold to the heat--lol! Most apartments I've lived in have had a one cat rule in recent decades. Not sure why. Probably a good thing, actually--lol! We have a similar "collection" problem. People brought me abandoned, unwanted, and injured critters all my life...until I couldn't take them in any longer due to landlord rules. :(
I like winter, Linda. Not everything about it but I do like the slowing down.
Our summers have heated up, the humidity is far worse, Cheerful.
The hounds are couch potatoes, AC.
Greyhounds are wonderful animals, e.
That is true, Jane. They are entertaining.
Funny Miss Merry, I told my husband dogs no kids!! He wasn't yet my husband, though. You've had dogs, even if they didn't live with you.
A super-energetic dog must be quite a handful. Very sensible to pass them on to someone who is happy with all that energy.
I know what you mean, Ami. If we lived in the city with a fenced yard we would still very likely get a rescue, but we don't. So it's cats!
My mother bred dogs for a few years but I've never had puppies, Far Side. Now kittens.....
It's difficult to rent and have dogs, Rita. Most rentals don't allow it. I guess we are suckers for the strays in life!
Yes, it can be that, nick. I was also well experienced with dogs and capable of dealing with and training them.
Hi Sandra, these are great photos and sweet pups! I see two rescue greyhounds being walked in the neighborhood quite often. I miss having dogs also, having had their company for a good part of my life. However, it's not in the cards now. I get my doggy fixes when I go out though and am hoping one day my son and his wife will get a pup. They both would love one, have been talking about it and we have offered pup-sitting services. It has been in the mid 90s here the last couple of days. Looking forward to it cooling down and keeping fingers crossed for everyone in need of a break from the heat.
Yes, there does, for many of us, comes a time we need to know our limitations, Denise. My son has a Yorkie but I don't see him often. He can't come here because of Gatto, who is not a shy cat. The Yorkie is a hunter! It's nice today, yippee!
Hot hot... I can take the heat but not the humidity well.
Fun memories to look back on. I look back on my little crazy terrier type dogs and the hounds in my life and wonder about all the fun and love I have had from them.
Every time I see their photos, it is a bit bittersweet and fond.
Thanks for this.
We feel the same, Val. About the dogs and humidity.
It's cool here and I'm enjoying it. We have two dogs and right now we're in the middle of the great shed off. It lasts a month, twice a year. Yay.
I can't imagine 7 large dogs though. Did they come in the house?
You gave me the proper name for a German Shepherd, Pixie. German Shedder! Yes, they were in the house. Those 7 dogs were less trouble than one of my cats!
I agree with you, having another dog or dogs helps with the training. We are dogless at this moment though I will be ready to train a new one at some point. We still miss Bug, it's been two months now. Feels like yesterday.
Dogs are an everyday companion. They leave a large emptiness when they are gone, Ivy.
