Blackberries

While at Costco I picked up blackberries, something I haven't had in I don't know how long. This recipe called itself a cobbler but I wouldn't call it that. Anyway, whatever it's called it's good. I have developed, at my advanced age, a sweet tooth. My thought is that I'm stressed, depressed and all around out of sorts. Somehow, not only eating, but baking desserts is comforting for me. I am cutting the recipes in half.

We are an ice rink. Melting during the day, freezing at night. I won't be making anymore adventures until this changes. My balance is terrible. I don't need a broken hip. I have been using the treadmill and my little peddler machine to help build lower body strength. I faced a tough fact recently. I'm not getting younger and there will be no magic wand waved over my head to fix me. I need to dig into myself and find a thread of the very determined person I once was.

Back to food. I bought steelhead trout, a favorite of mine, yesterday. I've been depriving myself because the cost soared and I balked. I gave in yesterday. So that is happily tonight's dinner. Fascinating, I know.

That blackberry dessert looks delicious. I've always had a sweet tooth and even looming diabetes hasn't swayed me.
There is an exercise called the sit stand, it's also a measurement of health. You sit in a chair and stand up, no arms, as many times as you can in 30 seconds. You should be able to do 10-15 of them. It's also excellent exercise for your quads.

I hear you loud and clear. Balance and a bit of leg strength goes a long way to helping you stay independent.
There is a ton of stress out there, I know.

We have had the same melt - thaw going on. Lucky for us the girls have a large area that is completely melted off. They will be mud puppies by this afternoon.

I had blackberries recently, just with yogurt. But I'm thinking of a blueberry clafouti today.
I second Pixie about sit to stand. Its an excellent exercise, one my PT says is almost the most important you can do. He added in an overhead lift with a dumbbell in the same movement. It keeps you able to walk, get on and off the toilet, climb stairs, all kinds of useful skills.

Very wise to stay put when there's ice everywhere, especially if you already have balance problems.

Yes, I need to get out and exercise more...I've let myself go to pot (belly that is!) My son shared this video relating to your ice. It made me giggle (I guess because it's cold here, but we don't have the ice!) https://www.tiktok.com/@accuweather/video/7603404456755088654?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7543332007444006413

Oh my gosh, cobbler is way to common a name for this masterpiece - it looks fabulous!!!
And I am glad to hear you are treating yourself. There is nothing wrong with a nice fish dinner once in a while. You deserve it!

Darn. Lost comment.

You are killing me with these desserts. I get a fair amount of exercise with the horses, but think I should start doing that getting out of the chair exercise!

That trout sounds wonderful and your blackberry dessert looks delicious. When are you inviting us all over? LOL! I think we need our treats every now and again. I need to do more balance exercises. I have to get around with a walker for longer jaunts, those jaunts being very short. I miss my long walks but maybe next year things will be better and hoping for you too.

If I did tgat fast, I would get so lightheaded I might pass out! But it sounds like something to try.

Ooooo, blackberries. It's been a while, and tvat looks so tasty.
Wise move to stay inside. I stayed home and inside for over 2 weeks while it was so icy, and I am glad I did. Two friends broke bones, several fell and had other injuries (some serious), and there were countless car accidents. One friend had to go into the river to rescue his neighbors when their car slid over the bank!
I took need to add more strength building exercises. It seems like I am busy all the time, but is what I do helping maintain strength? I am not sure.

The dessert looks great, but I'm more interested in the exercise. It's essential for my mental as well as physical health. The trick is to find a way to enjoy it. (I do mine inside and usually I stream videos while I do it. Or put on one of my dance DVDs.)

The desert is Yummy. I have to say, I am. curious tho about the steelhead trout. Here in Louisiana, it's turning to crawfish season. We eat a lot of crawfish tails, which are packaged locally, but for fish, it's usually catfish. If I lived closer to the Gulf, it would be Snapper or Grouper.

I haven't yet had trouble getting up from sitting but I did do 15 of those yesterday and I will continue to do it, Pixie.

Ah, mud puppies! I sadly know them well, Val.

I was thinking of making a blueberry clafoutis today, too. I can't do weight lifting over my head, Boud. I've torn the rotator cuff in both shoulders and have arthritis in my right shoulder, the result of years of young horses. I have no ability to lift things above my head. I am taking the advice of the up/down reps.

For sure, nick.

That's some serious ice, Denise!

It doesn't look anything like a cobbler to me, either. I made one of the filets for dinner with asparagus, Miss Merry.

It didn't end up in spam, AC. It's traveling somewhere out there in the ether.

I used to laugh out loud when a doctor told me I had to move more, Lori. I was on my feet from sunrise to sunset, I think I was moving! It does work on a specific part of the body, so it's worth doing.

I used to belong to a horse forum long ago. Many of the participants lived within a doable drive so I invited then to my house for lunch. Most I didn't know outside the forum. Many came. It was a fun time, Denise. I met blog friends in 2010. On from Denmark and one from northern Minnesota. They and their families. I stayed friends with the one from Denmark. She has been her several times on her way to see family in South Dakota. Which is all to say I have no problem welcoming people in!

That's the thing, Sue. Busy is really good but there are targeted muscles that aren't used as much and it shows as we age. I'm careful with ice. I had a brain injury in 2011 from a backward free-fall onto cement. I'm amazed I lived.

I do my back exercises but I only recently realized that wasn't enough. So I'm peeling and treadmill walking. And now I'll be doing standup/sit down a couple of times a day, Cheerful. I used to love to dance. I remember dragging Mark to a disco club in the '80s. Poor guy!!

Steelhead are a rainbow trout that live in cold water along the Pacific basin, Tommy. They migrate to salt water then return to the tributaries to spawn, like salmon. The filets looks like trout but a little darker pink. They don't taste like trout. I've never had crawfish nor catfish. I have had grouper and snapper. My favorite fish is walleye but it is very expensive. That is from northern Minnesota. Maybe elsewhere.

Sandra, you do know even the photos of your dessert makes everyone want to come over for a taste. Exercise is not a favorite here as well, but a recent recurrence of plantar fasciitis has made it a necessity. The sit-stand one was also recommended last year, but regretfully I slacked off so will be revisiting that one as well.

I LOOOOVE berries. Your dessert looks pretty. I've been working on my movement as well. A small indoor trampoline that I've been doing low impact stuff to help my recently sore spine. Very nice. I put on educational videos and enjoy it. Or just with quiet. I do miss my treadmill though. Wishing you a strong healthy rest of your week.
