She's trying to bury her leftovers? Our cat does that too but she's not so noisy about it. Heidi licks the carpet and couch endlessly. Drives me crazy, especially when I sit on a wet spot:)
She is the most alert cat I've had. She looks for danger at every corner. Suspicious of everything, so this may be her calming action. I just thought about that.
She showed up at my barn as a small kitten, Sue. She wouldn't come near me but one evening there she was, standing with her front paws on the gala of the door wanting in. That was November of 2019. She has her quirks. Unlike me.

Pixel did this. She never made claw marks on the white cabinet she did it to, but it was a daily thing. None of us could figure out why she did it.

I think you need to up her diet, or at least she might think that.
Torties are quirky cats. My tortie will stand at a door, and just scream randomly.
We had a cat who did this when we had to give he a prescription diet - she didn't care for it and was showing us what she thought it was!

She is an odd one, Jane. She doing her obsession right now. She's the only tortie I've had.
At least your cat had a reason. Frieda is tightly wound, maybe this is her pressure release.

I can't view it from where I am however the noise of plastic would drive me up the wall and down the side
