Thank You

I want to say thank you for your kind words regarding Dani. She had been a hale and hardy horse throughout her life. She was a good saddle horse and all around easy to handle. Dani was a Half Arabian. The Arabian Horse Association recognizes crossbreds as long as they are at least one half Arab. Her dam was a Morocco Spotted Horse (RF Fleetwind), her sire an Arabian (Road Warrior).

Dani died from colic, every horse persons dread. She wasn't coming out of it, only getting worse. So we called it and she was put down. Our neighbor used his backhoe to bury her in the horse cemetery. She leaves behind a paternal brother and a maternal sister.

So....life moves on. Thank you once again.

Oh my Colic so hard to watch them suffer. We always have to do what is best for the animal not the best for us. It is hard.

I know little about horses other than colic is a dreaded situation. You did the good thing there. Hard, but what a good person does for a loved animal.

Far Side, it is what we all dread. I've dealt with a lot of it. Too many didn't make it. Nature did not treat horses kindly when it designed their innards.

Say the word and faces blanch, Boud. I now have a baker's dozen---13 horses. All born here.

Sorry to hear that Dani succumbed to colic. I didn't know colic was common among horses. Obviously you had to end her suffering.

Sandra said...

Quite common, nick. Not always fatal, but often enough.

So sorry to hear that. It is always so hard to let them go, even when you know it is the right thing to do. Horses are a bit large to hold in your arms or your lap, but I bet you were right there for her. *hugs*

That’s an impressive pedigree to me.

Rita, I got to cradle them when they were born. Now I stroke them and tell them how good they are.

Thanks, Ivy.

AC, she was a good horse. She had been sold twice. First time the person who bought her called me to say her husband was throwing a fit about another horse, so I bought her back. The second time a friend bought her, a few months later she lost her job. I bought her back. None of it had anything to do with her.

I'm so sorry to hear this, but I do understand the horrors of colic. I've lost 3 over the years to that also.
She was a beauty.

I have lost two to colic and one was saved by having a 9lb stone removed from her intestines. Thank goodness for credit cards. All this was over the years or my past history. I have a camera out at the place where we board and look especially at feeding time to see if any of our four are lying down. I think I have PTSD from all the animals I have held while they were put to sleep.

Sorry the above post was all about me. You have had some awesome horses and I am sure amazing memories !!

It's never easy, but you always know when it's time. Almost every horse I have lost was due to colic and I know just how you feel. A baker's dozen....still family. xoxoxoxox

Val, it's a horrible thing.

A nine pound stone, whoa! I know what you mean about PTSD. It adds up over the years and after awhile I find I can't stuff my emotions aside anymore.

Sharing experiences is part of the process, Marlane.

Most of mine have also died of colic. It's probably the #1 killer. Just a guess, but an educated one, Lori.

Thanks for the support Sandra. Our cat is in the process of dying at the moment. This will be the last cat. I will post on my blog when he is finally gone. 15 years old.

I'm sorry, Marlane. It's so hard.

I have been catching up on blog reading this week, Sandra, and this post was the saddest by far.

It's a hard thing to do, Dorothy.
