More Photos

As some know, I've been going through the large amount of photos I brought home from my parent's home after my mother died six years ago. Today I'm going to make it mostly all about me.

My brother Robert. And me. He's three years younger so I was maybe five.

Our dog, Duchess, when we lived in San Diego. She was born 2 months after me and died when I was 14. We grew up together and I loved her and she loved me.

Me at maybe four with, I suppose, a cousin from the paternal side. I didn't know that side well but this would have been the grandparents house. German Shepherd puppies.

The grandparents, Blanche and Arthur. Me with the doll they gave me for Christmas. The doll my mother told (screamed) my father to put in the attic because a seven year old did something that terrible that she never saw it again. It was in the attic when I sold the house. I left it there.

Duchess.

Blanche and Arthur at their home.

I got to know Blanche about a year before she died. I started going to her house several times a week. She was nothing like I'd been told she was. She had a library full of books and she let me take whatever I wanted. I got many family heirlooms from her. Better late than never that I got to know her. She was a regal woman, smart and independent minded. She was pleased she got to see and know me before she died.

What lovely photo's. I had a German Shephard too and Ioved her so much. This project is bringing up all kinds of emotions, I'm sure.

I'm glad you got to know your grandmother before she died.
Your mother taking away your doll, I'm so sorry.

The pictures of Duchess warm my heart, but the story about the doll is so sad. Thank you for the pictures and this post. ❤️

Wonderful photos and the history behind it is insightful too. I do know the feeling of the doll in the attic.
Dogs were a part of your life as a kid as they were for me too. No wonder you love animals so much!

It's been interesting going through them, Tommy.

I grew up with those dogs, Lori. The last, Keetah, came to live with us after my mother died. We had her for 3 years. She was wonderful. You were lucky to grow up with one.

I bring some of these things up once in awhile because I have found people are uncomfortable with the fact that personality disorders are real. Just look at who is in the Oval Office. There's more than one, Pixie.I'm glad I got to know here as well.

Duchess was a wonderful dog, Cheerful. I survived almost 70 years of my life with her, I hope my brother is doing ok. 32 years ago, the last. time I saw him, he was not.

So many photos, Lori. The memories don't hurt anymore. They simply are.

Sandra said...

Why, thank you, Miss Merry. You made me smile.

I like that. This is now my word for them, too, AC.

My mother's family were prolific photo takers, Linda.

I've had a dog in my life ever since I was born, Val. German Shepherds and toy Poodles growing up. Cats, too.

I was also discouraged from getting to know my maternal grandma as my father for some reason had a low opinion of her. Good that you were able to get to know Blanche before she died.

I wish that I had more childhood photos, but my late father preferred taking movies. I have a collection of the films but have only viewed a few once. I hope that looking at your vintage photos doesn’t bring back too many bad memories like the one about the doll.

The things people do, nick.

You are welcome, Dora.

Yes, it was.

There's more, Ivy!

Little kids are cute, Denise.

My family always seemed to have a camera ready, Dorothy. I'm not affected by the memories. They exist but it's not now.

How wonderful that you were able to connect with Blanche and for her to get to know you. I feel fortunate in having the opportunity to become closer to my dad. Growing up he was always busy, and often preoccupied with his own pursuits. In his 80's I lived near him and saw a totally different side of him.

So glad you got to know and really like your grandmother, Blanche, before she died!
My paternal grandmother had a doll on a dresser in her bedroom that we were not allowed to touch when we were kids. She didn't even like my sister and I looking at her. After Anna died, I have that doll--lol! She's in a storage box somewhere. I probably would have taken that doll with me from the attic--LOL!
Loved all the photos. :)

I love all the pictures, I have many from my family as well. It's wonderful to have those connections, not sure why it's so meaningful, but it is.

I can relate to the doll story.

Most excellent on the more.

What a history in those pictures. I like how your life has been full of dogs, all looking patient while being hauled about! The doll story is so sad. But I'm glad you've made your peace with it and it's just a fact now.

He was nice, Dreaming. I initiated the contact and found an interesting person. My dad was gone a lot, too.

My DIL wanted me to take it but I had no interest. I hadn't set eyes on it since I was 7 and all it was is a memory. You had a stern grandmother, Rita!

Sandra said...

Ha!

Sandra said...

I'm really sorry you can relate but I know there are a lot of us that can. That's why I bring it up sometimes. To let people know they aren't alone, Ami.

Lots of photos whose history I don't know, Boud. But I like seeing them anyway. My whole life has been with dogs. Multiple dogs at once. To not have one now is hard. So I collect cats!
