Yesterday was a deeply disturbing, sad day in Minnesota. As you likely know, a state representative and her husband were murdered by a now known, but still at large man, leaving their children parentless. He also attempted to assassinate a state senator and his wife, shooting both multiple times. Somehow, they survived. We all knew it was only a matter of time, with the hateful and inflammatory rhetoric coming from the highest places in our national government. Knowing does not make the shock and sorrow any easier.
There was a shelter in place warning which included the planned protest at the state capitol. People came anyway, some saying they came because of this assassination. People showed up across the state to tell our government we will not submit to authoritarian rule. The massive numbers across the country and the world say more about the dissent than anything I can say.
I saw yesterday the response from MAGA. Exactly what I expected. I believe the true believers are irredeemable. I and the majority of my country will not stand for the crowning of a king. The seating of a dictator. The rule by oligarchs.

These are real patriots. They show those lives were not in vain. I'm sorry for your loss. Terrible, the direct result of what we're protesting against.
I just want to say wow. I was shocked to hear the news yesterday and so dismayed.
I saw photos of Madison, WI yesterday and was impressed also. Many more protestors against a false king than those that may have made the parade.
Absolutely a direct result, Boud. I've read some of the MAGA chatter and They believe the shooter to be a "leftwing lunatic" who decided to kill a "moderate Democrat". I'm sure the manifesto with about 70 names of democratic lawmakers, high profile liberals and pro choice leaders will be labeled a conspiracy. I don't know what he is and I will wait to say until I do know. I doubt he is a leftwing lunatic.
You have familiarity with St. Paul, Val so you may know the distance between the Capitol and the Cathedral. I guess the official number attending the birthday parade is 250,000. They must have been camouflaged. The few times I looked in on it the 'crowd' was sparse and the wanna-be king looked unhappy.
Just reading this and seeing the picture made me well up in pride and sorrow. Made me so happy that many, many more people showed up to protest him than went to his parade. (He looked like he was sad or falling asleep!) I don't believe the person is a leftwing lunatic, either. I hope he is caught soon!
What a day! Minnesota is a strong and determined state to stand up this way. The birthday party looked like a flop. Another tragic day in America brought on by division and a heartless leader. I wonder how the members of congress are going to spin this.
He definitely is not a liberal, lunatic? I’d say yes, Rita.
We can make educated guesses, Lori. He looked unhappy during his expensive ego party.
I was heartbroken to hear the news. And very disappointed in the statement from the president. I know that had this happened in any other president's term we would have had a special news report from the oval office on Saturday evening with the news shared in a choking voice holding back tears. It is the most reprehensible action. The speech would end with a call for peace and fellowship in the face of tragedy. But no. And the statement by Senator Mike Lee is traitorous. I would like to see his immediate resignation called for . My heart bleeds for the families.
Minnesotans stood tall in the face of senseless tragedy.
The violence and deaths are heartbreaking, but bless the people who attended the protests. It's heartwarming that the protests have been so loving and peaceful.
Political assasinations, that's what other countries would call these. It's horrific.
It just plain scary no question about it.
Horrible, and people stood up regardless of fear. Minnesotans are a great example of the good still in this country.
This occupier of the Oval Office is a dangerous toddler, Miss Merry. Mike Lee should be in trouble for that comment but he isn't.
You know we are an elbows up state, AC.
I am so proud of the people in this state who came out and said no to authoritarianism, Cheerful. There are deep red areas in MN and people came out in those towns.
It certainly was a political assassination, Pixie.
Yes it is, Dora.
The entire state had protests, e. Even where it's ruby red.
Heartbreaking. Those kiddos. And the parents. Heartbreaking.
