Dusk
It is -21 F with a wind chill factor of -37 (-29 C -38 C). It is a bit chilly. The horses will stay tucked into their stalls. As long as they have hay it's ok by them.
The fireplace has been busy. Mark brought in plenty of wood so he won't have to do that today. He does need to go out for the beasties, though. At least the barn is reasonably warm. I finished my latest Inspector Gamache book and have started on As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. Sort of polar opposites. Next in the que is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Both books have been on the waiting list for awhile and both became ready at one time. I can get through both in the 21 days allotted.
I've kept myself busy and the kitchen warm the last few days with baking. A couple of days ago I made tarelli, a Southern Italian roll which is something like a bagel. Yesterday I made a lemon olive oil cake. Olive oil cakes are light and moist. Too bad they aren't calorie free!
So, a brief synopsis of life on the farm in January. Take care my east coast friends. You may be overwhelmed by snow.

ohhhhh, I LOOOOOVES lemon bakes. Really looks gooooooood. Glad you're staying warm and that the horses have hay and are also staying warm.
I was stunned by that Faulkner, just mind blown transported into another world. It was many years ago and I still remember. Plath, meh.
Your life sounds cozy just now.
Stay safe, warm, and cozy! ❤️
One of the things I did when homeschooling my kids was read a bunch of classic literature I'd missed while growing up. I was particularly touched/disturbed by two Steinbeck titles, Of Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath. Both stories have stayed with me.
Staying warm by the fire and reading sounds wonderful right now, but the cold OUTdoors... not so wonderful!
I love lemon desserts and the cake looks delicious.
Stay warm, it's going to be a good week or so.
That cake looks delicious, lemon is so wonderful in the winter time. Stay warm my friend.
It's very good. A friend had forwarded me a vegan olive oil lemon cake. Would you like the recipe, Ivy?
I've just started it, Boud, but you have made me very interested now.
I'm doing my best, Cheerful.
I read a lot of classics as a teen. I read Tale of Two Cities in 7th grade while excused from gym because of an injury. I spent an hour in the library 5 days a week for 2 weeks. I was in heaven, Ami. I've read both of those. I really need to dig into my bookshelves and spend some time with those books.
We are hunkered down, Lori. Plenty of food so no need to leave the farm. Stay by you fire and if you want something to do you can always call me!
It is an excellent cake, Pixie. You are in the freezer as well, so the same thoughts for you.
Stay warm! It is a real cold spell:(
So cold! The cake looks delicious! Hope you are staying warm.
This is a time that I am glad we live in Florida, although we are expecting freezing temperatures, it's nothing like you are seeing. Baking is a perfect antidote!
And I thought it was cold here! A friend from Brockport is now in Minnesota with a large group of Clergy from all over the place. According to the news, a whole bunch of them got arrested today while they were protesting. Having a fire is the best way for me to get through the winter. And that cake! Ooooo La La!
The fire looks toasty,
I'd try it sure. I love, love, love lemon and I have lemon and olive oil at home right now. Thank you. I don't have email yet ... I'm gonna try and get it fixed this weekend. Or Monday if they aren't there. But if it's no trouble, sounds like a yummy bake. Thank you.
Sounds like busy but cozy times up there! We will be sharing some of that cold soon, and are getting ready for it.
The cake looks delicious.
Good grief, minus 21, that's something else. Temperature here in NI is a manageable 7 degrees. Would you believe, I've never read the Bell Jar, despite it being so well-known. I really should read it.
You're so correct. Brrrrrr!!, Down Here we are saying that too. It's not nice going from 64 degrees to 15 degrees; most of us can't handle that sort of temperature, and our homes can't either.
Sandra, as I didn’t know about tarelli, I just watched a YouTube video on making it and wondered if you serve them with anything ir enjoy as a snack oerhaos while reading? The lemon olive oil cake looks delicious. Do you have a favorite recipe?
It’s really cold here with some ice on my window. Snow will come tomorrow afternoon, but I am not sure yet how much we will get here.

This is orange but can be lemon, Ivy. My friend made it to take to the place she volunteers, there's a couple of vegans also volunteering. She said it's good.
Yes it is, Far Side.
I'm sorry, Lori. I know another Lori and I didn't look close enough to realize it's you, not her! But the sentiment is the same.
Thank you, Jackie. I'm trying.
Florida summers are, to me, far worse than this, Dreaming! Get those plants covered!
Thousands where on the streets in both St. Paul and Mpls, Lori. I think the people are serious if they willing spend a day outside in this kind of weather. We won't give in to autocracy. Good for your friend and all the others.
I have been burning a lot of wood.
It is that, Dora.
Thank you, Sue. Most of the country is under bad weather.
Either had I, nick. I haven't started it yet.
This is the recipe I used, Dorothy.

I use tarelli with soup or anything else you may want with a roll. Any herb you like will do or none at all. Snack is always welcome!
We are not in the path of the snow. Snow doesn't generally happen when it's this cold. Stay warm, AC.
Much thanks!
I love to see your meals. This looks delicious! Brrrr on the weather. Sounds like your horses will be nice and cozy in their barn. That fire is warming me through just looking at it. Stay safe and warm, our snow is supposed to start at 11.00 p.m.-ish. It's gone from 21 inches to about a foot right now, with ice.
I thoroughly enjoy the Inspector Gamache series and thank you for the others. I've been wanting something new to read.
